Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has announced urgent measures to control spiraling costs associated with the HS2 rail project. Following years of cost overruns and mismanagement, the government will conduct an independent review, led by infrastructure expert James Stewart, to assess HS2’s cost controls and project delivery.
The review, part of a broader effort to streamline major transport infrastructure, will focus on improving oversight, renegotiating contractor incentives, and ensuring future accountability. The government aims to complete the Birmingham-London phase at the lowest possible cost while cancelling Phase 2. A new CEO, Mark Wild, will oversee the reset.
