American private equity firm TPG is in discussions to acquire British data centre operator Ark Data Centres in a transaction potentially worth $5 billion, reflecting accelerating investment in digital infrastructure as artificial intelligence drives demand for computing capacity. The proposed acquisition, reported by the Financial Times on 28 October, would represent one of the largest European data centre deals of the year.

Ark, founded in 2005, operates 27 data centres across the United Kingdom and Belgium, providing computing infrastructure to government agencies and corporate customers. Its clients include IBM and cybersecurity company Palo Alto Networks, while its Crown Hosting Data Centres joint venture with the UK Cabinet Office serves public-sector organisations. Hedge fund Elliott Management, which first invested in Ark in 2012, is exploring the sale following more than a decade of ownership.

TPG has expanded its exposure to digital infrastructure since entering the data centre sector in 2019. The potential acquisition comes amid intensifying competition among investment firms seeking assets capable of supporting cloud computing and AI applications. According to Synergy Research Group, global data centre transactions reached $89.4 billion in 2026, already exceeding the previous year's total by approximately 50%.

Negotiations remain ongoing, and neither a definitive agreement nor an acquisition timetable has been announced. Nevertheless, the prospective transaction illustrates the changing composition of institutional real estate portfolios. Facilities that once occupied a specialised corner of commercial property are attracting substantial investment as access to computing capacity, electricity and reliable digital infrastructure becomes increasingly important to the global technology economy.
