Globe Telecom, a leading Philippines-based telecommunications provider, has announced a 4.2% reduction in its carbon emissions, achieved through the deployment of Qualcomm’s AI-powered RAN automation platform, Edgewise. This initiative is part of Globe’s broader commitment to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
In a recent statement, Globe highlighted the significant expansion of the Edgewise platform, which was developed by Qualcomm in partnership with Amdocs. The AI-based Energy Efficiency Orchestration application, powered by AWS Cloud infrastructure, has been operational in Globe’s network for the past seven months. During this period, the platform has helped optimise the energy efficiency of Globe’s Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment, yielding reductions in both carbon emissions and operational costs.
“This collaboration is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and innovation in delivering superior network experiences as we aim for decarbonisation and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050,” said Joel Agustin, Head of Service Planning and Engineering at Globe.
The AI-driven platform uses automation to adjust energy consumption based on network demand, effectively reducing the environmental impact of telecommunications infrastructure. By automating energy efficiency processes, Globe has taken a significant step toward integrating sustainability with advanced technology, a key focus of its operational strategy.
ST Liew, Vice President of Qualcomm, emphasized the critical role of AI and automation in driving energy-saving strategies across telecom networks. “AI and automation are essential technologies that enable operators to manage energy consumption more efficiently, helping them to meet sustainability goals while maintaining robust network performance,” he said.
Globe Telecom’s efforts align with global trends toward greener telecommunications operations, as companies increasingly turn to AI and automation to meet ambitious climate targets. By leveraging Qualcomm’s innovative platform, Globe not only reduces its carbon footprint but also positions itself as a leader in sustainable telecom practices within the Asia-Pacific region.
This initiative underscores the growing importance of technological advancements in the telecommunications sector, as operators worldwide strive to balance network performance with environmental responsibility.
