Cargill has signed a purchase and sale agreement for a 50% stake in SJC Bioenergia, granting the U.S. grain trader full control of the Brazilian sugar and renewable energy company. The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval, advances Cargill’s strategic objectives in the renewable energy sector. The company chose not to disclose the financial terms of the deal.

Having operated in Brazil for 60 years, Cargill has made substantial investments in its local operations, amounting to over 6.8 billion reais ($1.17 billion) in recent years. This acquisition underscores Cargill’s growing focus on renewable energy as part of its broader business strategy.

SJC Bioenergia, founded in 2006, has been a key business partner of Cargill since 2011. The company employs approximately 4,500 individuals and operates two plants in the Goias region, located in Brazil’s centre-western area. SJC Bioenergia specialises in processing sugarcane and corn, producing a variety of products including raw sugar, hydrated and anhydrous ethanol, corn oil, distillers’ dried grains (DDGs) with high protein content, and electricity generation.

This acquisition positions Cargill to further expand its presence in Brazil’s renewable energy and biofuel sectors, building on its longstanding relationship with SJC Bioenergia and its established infrastructure in the region.
